Unit 5

Bust Project

I want the character to have their head back, screaming, as if in pain. While a bit of a disturbing emotion, it is more interesting, as well as challenging to sculpt. I want to build elements from nature, such as trees, waves, mountains, and rivers on the bust. Combined with the pain on the face this will suggest nature being in pain. This message is relevant to today, as humans continue to non-sustainably use resources, contributing to climate change.

Plan:

- wedge clay

- form head and shoulders separate

- score and slip together

- form general shape of face by carving away or adding bits of clay when needed

- add facial details

- add nature-inspired details

- scoop/hollow out head, neck, and shoulders

- fire and glaze

Reflection:

I wanted to do this project and had a good base started, but after it was left on the shelf for a week, it had been irreversibly damaged. I could have changed my plan after this happened and made something out of it anyway, but as I am starting to get short on time to do projects, I decided to put my bust in the slop bucket and spend my time learning on other projects. I'm sure this project would have provided many learning opportunities for me, but lacking time I moved on. In the unlikely event that I have time let over at the end of school year I would like to come back and retry this project as it seems fun.

Current Artist Inspired

Minsoo Yuh - personal website link here:

I have not started this project yet, but this is the artist I have chosen.

Due to the very small amount of time left in the school year, I will not be able to do this project. However in the future I would like to make ceramic inspired by Yuh's style. I like not only the trees and nature inspired patterns, but also the color palettes.

Choice Project

I have spent a lot more time trying to learn how to use the wheel, opposed to doing the assigned project so I can get better at a new skill. One Project I have tried on the wheel was a ramen bowl, something that I had wanted to make since the start of this class. I turned out smaller than I wanted, as I still have less control on the wheel than I would like to make to bowl larger. I also tried glazing it with mid-fire glaze and I hope that it turns out once it has been fired. I left dried bits of glaze at the bottom of the bowl in hopes that it makes a marbled color pattern.

Mask and Pueblo Style Vessel

Here are some pictures I would have used for inspiration for these projects if I had had enough time.
