Unit 3

Relief Carving

Plan:

- wedge clay

- roll slab

- use hexagon rolling pin to create pattern

- create bee and 2 hexagons

- carve out hexagon pattern

- glaze

Reflection:

Overall I like the shape of the pattern and the bee, and I hope to glaze it with different shades of yellow. I also like the hexagon as a hanger. If it were to do the project again I would like to add more dimension to the slab and clean up the cut-out hole.

This project is NOT finished yet. Hopefully it will be glazed soon.

Coil Bowl using Slump Mold and Sgraffito

Plan:

- wedge clay

- make coils

- keeping clay wet, put into slump mold

- smooth inside of bowl

- underglazed with patter

- sgraffito pattern

-  fire and clear glaze

Reflection:

I like the size and shape of the bowl, but I wanted the sides to be thick and the coil pattern to be more pronounced on the bottom. I like the sgraffito technique, and would have liked to do more of it on the inside and outside of the bowl but needed to be finished with the project as the monster project and final need time to be done as well. The drip pattern along the edges was not my original glazing play, as the sides started to crack (presumably due to the thin sides), but it also helps to add more texture.

This project is NOT finished yet. Hopefully it will be glazed soon.
