Relief Carving

Plan:

- wedge clay

- roll slab

- use hexagon rolling pin to create pattern

- create bee and 2 hexagons

- carve out hexagon pattern

- glaze

Reflection:

Overall I like the shape of the pattern and the bee, and I hope to glaze it with different shades of yellow. I also like the hexagon as a hanger. If it were to do the project again I would like to add more dimension to the slab and clean up the cut-out hole. I really like the way the color turned out as it is mostly uniform and it is hard to see the brush strokes of when the glaze was applied.

Coil Bowl using Slump Mold and Sgraffito

Plan:

- wedge clay

- make coils

- keeping clay wet, put into slump mold

- smooth inside of bowl

- underglazed with patter

- sgraffito pattern

-  fire and clear glaze

Reflection:

I like the size and shape of the bowl, but I wanted the sides to be thick and the coil pattern to be more pronounced on the bottom. I like the sgraffito technique, and would have liked to do more of it on the inside and outside of the bowl but needed to be finished with the project as the monster project and final need time to be done as well. The drip pattern along the edges was not my original glazing play, as the sides started to crack (presumably due to the thin sides), but it also helps to add more texture.

Unfortunately because this bowl was thin it was too fragile to go in the kiln. It broke, but it also taught me to make coil built projects thicker in the future.

Slab with Darts Bowl

Plan:

- wedge clay

- make slab

- cut and bevel sides to fit the slab together

-cut and bevel the flaps/side of bowl to make bottom

- use slump mold to help round out bottom

- add spout

Reflection:

Overall I am not satisfied with this project. It isn't really big enough to use as a mixing bowl, which is what I was intending to use it for. I did enjoy learning the new technique with the darts and would like to try this again, but I don't think it worked well for this project. I also meant to do the sgraffito technique on it but forgot before I fired it the first time. I can still try to save it by doing a fun glazing pattern though!
